Badminton aces claim second spot

Blackburn Rovers’ badminton aces netted the runners-up prize in the first ever North West Premier League 4 Sport (PL4S) Badminton Tournament.

Boys and girls from the St Bede’s satellite club came a close second to Manchester United at the inaugural event.

The tournament, which was held at the Kirkby Sports College in Liverpool, also saw teams from Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton and Bolton take part.

All participants played against representatives from their respective Premier League clubs, with finals scores and points being collated to announce the overall winner.

The PL4S project, which aims to offer thousands of young people the chance to get involved in badminton, judo, volleyball and table-tennis ahead of the 2012 Olympics, is now in its third year of being successfully run at Blackburn Rovers Community Trust

Claire Newton, PL4S co-ordinator, said: “It was a fantastic day and well organised by Badminton England. The team from St Bede’s played some outstanding badminton and were very unlucky not to walk away with top prize.

“Badminton has been one of our strongest sports in the project, with seven new clubs being formed in East Lancashire. Next for the participants is the National Final in early 2012 at Milton Keynes, which will see the Blackburn team compete against teams from all the other Premier League clubs.”

If you would like to get involved in badminton, Blackburn Rovers Community Trust runs free family fun sessions every Monday night at Blackburn Rovers Sports Arena, Darwen Vale, from 7-8pm. The Next Chapter

Blackburn Rovers Community Trust recently teamed up with STREETS UK to help young people understand the consequences of risk-taking behaviour.

The week-long workshop, titled ‘The Next Chapter’, was held over the summer holidays at Darwen Alrdridge Community Academy.

The workshop was broken down into three tiers – mentoring, multi-sports and teamwork – and covered a range of topics including risk-taking and anti-social behaviour, equality and diversity, stereotyping, influences and peer pressure.

It aimed to promote the importance of education, self-belief, attitude, sustainable development, goal-setting and aspirations.

The students were mentored about real-life experiences in the morning, before being shown how to use their attitude positively, to get more out of sport in the afternoon.

The Chapters Programme, which was set up by Rovers star David Dunn and business partner John Magee, targets young people from Blackburn with Darwen that could be classed as vulnerable or being at risk.

John Magee said: “It’s all about showing the kids that they have a choice and from that choice comes their actions and from those actions come consequences.

“We were very grateful to Darwen Academy for letting us use their state-of-the-art facilities and to Blackburn Rovers Community Trust, who have agreed to provide community coaches and the use of their Indoor Centre.

“In partnership with the Trust, participants will work towards a nationally recognized qualification, which is a fantastic opportunity for everyone on the programme and will help them greatly.

“Our aim is offer participants future career paths on completion of the 20-week programme, which is a unique opportunity in the Borough.”
