In acknowledgement of its excellence in ICT provision, Blackburn Rovers Community Trust is delighted to announce recognition as an Acer Education Centre.

Acer’s project for Education, in collaboration with European Schoolnet (EUN), started last January with the ambitious goal of helping schools move into the 21st century by providing the opportunity to develop new teaching and learning methods through the use of technology.

Students and teachers visiting the stimulating learning environment of Ewood Park to take part in the wide range of curriculum programmes delivered by the Trust’s award winning education department will now also benefit from the use of Acer tablet computers to support their learning. The working relationship established between the Trust and Acer will see further development of the use of tablet computers in the classroom in the future.

Chris Dawes, the Trust’s ICT Network Manager said, “This is a fantastic accolade for the Trust to receive which reflects the excellence of the ICT technologies we make available to pupils. In conjunction with our wireless network the tablet PCs will allow us to increase the degree of ICT integration across the curriculum.”

Duncan Kinloch, the Trust’s Deputy Chief Executive, said, “The use of tablet PCs in the classroom is known to increase pupil engagement and motivation and so is likely to have a positive impact on learning outcomes. This new technology supports the delivery of our education programmes as a means to help raise attainment levels among young people.

Blackburn Rovers’ badminton aces netted the runners-up prize in the first ever North West Premier League 4 Sport (PL4S) Badminton Tournament.

Boys and girls from the St Bede’s satellite club came a close second to Manchester United at the inaugural event.

The tournament, which was held at the Kirkby Sports College in Liverpool, also saw teams from Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton and Bolton take part.

All participants played against representatives from their respective Premier League clubs, with finals scores and points being collated to announce the overall winner.

The PL4S project, which aims to offer thousands of young people the chance to get involved in badminton, judo, volleyball and table-tennis ahead of the 2012 Olympics, is now in its third year of being successfully run at Blackburn Rovers Community Trust

Claire Newton, PL4S co-ordinator, said: “It was a fantastic day and well organised by Badminton England. The team from St Bede’s played some outstanding badminton and were very unlucky not to walk away with top prize.

“Badminton has been one of our strongest sports in the project, with seven new clubs being formed in East Lancashire. Next for the participants is the National Final in early 2012 at Milton Keynes, which will see the Blackburn team compete against teams from all the other Premier League clubs.”

If you would like to get involved in badminton, Blackburn Rovers Community Trust runs free family fun sessions every Monday night at Blackburn Rovers Sports Arena, Darwen Vale, from 7-8pm. Rovers star Mark Bunn was the guest of honour at the latest presentation event staged by Blackburn Rovers Community Trust.

The goalkeeper was on hand at Ewood Park to celebrate the achievements of attendees who successfully participated in the Education Department’s daytime and after-school programmes.

Providing young people with the chance to experience a variety of imaginative learning activities in a stimulating environment, an increasing number of learners from schools, colleges and community organisations benefit each year from participation in the wide range of programmes on offer at the Trust.

Mark presented awards to youngsters who participated in the Goal, Pitching In, Double Club, Growing Equipped and Darwen Aldridge Community Academy Literacy Project initiatives.

Along with certificates and match tickets to Blackburn Rovers versus Tottenham Hotspurs, major prize winners received Rovers goody bags for positive attitude.  For each of the named projects, two extra special prize winners were chosen. The participants who showed the most progress on a project each received a signed ball, whilst the pupils who showed the most outstanding contribution to their respective projects were each awarded a signed shirt.
