As part of its Extra Time project the Trust delivers I.T. sessions specifically for the over 55s. These sessions provide not only a chance to improve I.T. skills but also offer the opportunity to make new friends in a welcoming and supportive environment.  Unlike school having a chat is actively encouraged!

Although some learners have never previously even switched on a computer, the small class numbers mean that the tutor is able to give each one of them the level of individual attention needed to help confidently build proficiency at their own pace.

The flexible delivery style adopted means that attendees themselves help determine lesson content according to what they want to learn.  Current modules studied include:

  • Word processing.
  • Internet
  • Search engines
  • Shopping online
  • Using price comparison websites
  • Email - creating email accounts; sending and receiving emails using Microsoft Outlook.
  • Microsoft Publisher - creating and designing posters, including image manipulation.
  • Microsoft Word – copy; cut; paste; drag and drop; formatting; bullets and numbering; margins and tables; tables; images and WordArt.

Being competent in the use of I.T. is now fast becoming a standard requirement of everyday life and benefits abound - Online shopping for insurance, goods and services can help save substantial amounts of money not to mention the fantastic holiday deals that can be found, all done at the searcher's own convenience and in the comfort of their own home.  For those with families and friends scattered afar the use of email to share news and photographs can also make it easier to keep in touch.

I.T. sessions currently take place at the BRIC every Wednesday, from 10am to 12am, at a cost of just £2 per person.
