Blackburn Rovers Double Club is currently enjoying a successful fourth year of delivery in local Primary and Secondary schools. The programme, focus of which can be English, Maths or a combination of the two according to school choice, has been independently evaluated and is proven to raise levels of attainment, motivation for learning and self-confidence among those pupils targeted to participate and accepted as Club members.

Double Club runs in line with National Curriculum requirements and is creatively designed to use the medium of football as a motivational tool to provide stimulating access to learning. Key Stage 2/3/4 programme content is specifically written for those pupils considered to be underachieving who display a lack of motivation in their learning and who may also need a boost to their confidence. While an interest in football is an advantage due to use of the sport as the main means of engagement and resource, sporting ability itself is not as important as enthusiasm.

Double Club provision is bespoke and tailored to meet need as identified and agreed with each participating school. All sessions are delivered on school site during curriculum time by fully qualified, experienced teaching and multi-sports coaching staff, supplementing existing school provision in order to enhance teaching and learning.

Programmes run for 10 weeks over the course of a term, comprising two classroom sessions and one professional football coaching session, both with identified curriculum focus, per week.

Membership of the Blackburn Rovers Double Club is exclusive. Interest from pupils and demand to participate always exceed the number of places available each cohort. Retention rates are high, with significant positive impact on attendance and pupil behaviour, despite the fact that it is quickly apparent that participation is definitely not an easy option! Our staff work closely with participating schools to ensure that each Double Club member is able to, and subsequently does, apply his/her learning and experience across the curriculum and in wider areas of school life.

It is clear to see that Double Club is highly valued by schools. Impact on pupil attainment is considerable – following the first term of delivery, for example, 88% of participating pupils were assessed to have increased by at least one sublevel in their English work, with 76% gaining an increase of two or more sublevels – after just 10 weeks!

Blackburn Rovers Double Club offers many benefits for learners and participating schools alike. For further information about the programme and the opportunities available for your pupils to become Double Club members, please contact:
