Whitefield to represent Rovers at Wembley

Whitefield Primary School representing Blackburn Rovers will be walking out on to the hallowed turf of Wembley Stadium after winning the EFL Kids Cup Northern Final yesterday.

After coming through the local heats and area finals, Whitefield took on the best the north had to offer as Rotherham United hosted the Northern Finals at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Centre.

Twelve teams took to the pitches dreaming of a trip to Wembley. Rovers had been placed in the tougher looking group two along with Derby County, Wigan Athletic, Stoke City, Sheffield United and Leeds United.

The lads opened their account with a convincing 2-0 victory over the Rams before drawing a blank against neighbours Wigan. Rovers then recorded back-to-back wins against Stoke City and Sheffield United before topping the group with a goaless draw with Leeds United.

The semi-finals saw Rovers take on second place from group one in Sheffield Wednesday. Rovers took the lead and looked in control before the owls came back to equalise in the second half. However, with just about the last kick of the game Rovers smashed in a late winner to progress to the final.

The final itself was a re-match of an earlier group game as Rovers and Wigan were to battle it out for a place to Wembley. In a tightly contested final, there was little margain for error and the game was settled by some tricky footwork and a finish in to the bottom corner.

Wigan came back in the second half and caused Rovers problems but some quick thinking from Whitefield in running the balls in to the corner and winning throw-ins meant they saw out the second half and booked their place at Wembley.

There were celebrations on the final whistle as Whitefield, who narrowly missed out twelve months earlier enjoyed their moment.

Whitefield will represent the famous blue and white of Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Kids Cup Final where the opponents will be winners of the Kids Cup Southern finals Brentford. The tie will take place ahead of the Championship Play-Off final on Monday 27th May. Further details will be released in due course.
