Rovers Represented by Alder Grange
Blackburn Rovers reached the quarter finals as Alder Grange School represented the club in this seasons EFL Trust Girls Cup Area Finals
The finals hosted at the home of last year's winners Bolton Wanderers saw Blackburn Rovers pitted in a difficult group alongside schools representing Wigan Athletic, Rochdale, Morecambe, Fleetwood Town and Preston North End.
The games were organised in to ten minute straight halves, meaning the action was often frantic but added to the entertainment and the drama in group B. Rovers' group stage campaign was an impressive one remaining unbeaten throughout against some talented teams.
Rovers finished second in the group following a tight opening 0-0 draw against Wigan, a narrow victory over Rochdale, a comfortable 3-0 win against Morecambe before two battling draws against a talented Fleetwood Town side and a very good Preston North End team.
It meant Rovers progressed through to face the third placed team from Group A in Bury. In a game that the blue and whites dominated it was the Shakers that took a suprise lead before Rovers were awarded a penalty within the last minute. The penalty was converted as the game went to penalties.
The shoot-out contained three takers from each team, if the scores were still level then it would go to sudden death. Rovers converted their first two penalties with Bury replying to each with goals. With the shoot-out at 2-2, Rovers couldn't convert the third and Bury stepped up to win the game with their final penalty.
Rovers going out on penalties didn't overshadow the brave performance the Alder Grange girls put in. They represented the club with true pride and should feel proud of their achievements in the tournament.
Andrew Aspinall the trust's Women & Girls Football Development Officer, who oversaw Alder Grange's development in the process said they competed with the best.
"I thought they competed well. We probably should have won that first game but they never gave up against two tough opponents in our final group games. These girls will be better for this experience next year. It has been a good day"
Thank you to Alder Grange for their participation and representing the football club.
